2025 Gil Carnal No. 182
One of the earliest lessons I learned from Gil Carnal was the importance of patience, care, and artistry in selecting materials—what he often described as “painting” with the wood grain. His approach emphasized bringing out the natural beauty of the materials in every detail.
My hands were involved in much of the work on this instrument, which I completed through fit, finish, and French polishing. It is recorded as No. 182 in Gil’s archive, and I consider it No. 9 in my own build series.

2026 Jesse Davis No. 10
This was a special commission for one of my students, developed in close collaboration and guided by their musical preferences, comfort, and tonal response. The project required me to learn new techniques and acquire additional tools in order to realize a highly specific design.
A rosette design drawn by his daughter was to be incorporated into the instrument. At first, it seemed beyond the limits of my existing methods, but through extensive research I discovered it could be done using laser cutting.
It became a significant technical undertaking and ultimately resulted in a fully custom, one-of-a-kind instrument.

2026 Jesse Davis No. 11
No. 11 brings together many of the ideas I have refined over the past several years as both a classical guitarist and luthier. It is, to date, the instrument that most fully reflects my approach to guitar making—designed to respond naturally to the player while keeping the music at the forefront.
The instrument features a Port Orford cedar soundboard paired with figured Port Orford cedar back and sides, resulting in a voice of notable warmth, color, and individuality. Madagascar rosewood appointments, including the bridge and headplate, provide contrast and refinement within an understated aesthetic.
Structurally, the guitar combines a traditional Hauser-style fan bracing system with an elevated, player-adjustable fingerboard. The intention was to integrate modern ergonomic design with the warmth, balance, and expressive voice of a traditional classical guitar. The result is an instrument that responds with nuance and clarity across a wide tonal palette.
